THE PROJECT
At Friendly Textiles we collect and research the brushed-out undercoat of double-coated dogs that usually ends up in plastic bags in landfills.
We strive to save this natural fibre from being thrown away and develop high-quality sustainable chiengora yarn suitable for the textile industry.
We research chiengora in laboratories to find out the properties of this newly rediscovered long-time known fibre and find ways to improve its functionality.
We aim to introduce a high-quality alternative to other traditionally used natural wools.
We invite all dog owners, breeders and groomers to donate the brushed-out dog undercoat that is not upcycled or otherwise used to the Friendly Textiles project.
Chiengora is fine wool from the brushed-out undercoat of double-coated dogs.
Chiengora is ethical: the collection of brushed-out dog undercoat does not harm or negatively affect any dog.
Chiengora is sustainable: natural, renewable and biodegradable.
COLLECTING THE UNDERCOAT
Each time you brush your dog, collect the brushed-out undercoat into a cardboard box (the fluff needs to breathe, so plastic bags are not good for the undercoat, nor Earth).
Dirty undercoat is as good as the clean one! We will wash the fibre before processing.
Only collect dry undercoat, as wet undercoat will mold.
Only collect the brushings, as cut hair are not suitable for our research.
Separate the brushed-out undercoat by breed if you collect the undercoat of dogs of more than one breed.
Separate the undercoat by color if you collect it of several dogs of the same breed but different colors.
